August lights up Isla Mujeres like a birthday cake candle! Not just because of the glorious sunshine, but also because of the Fiestas de Fundación – a month long celebration that’s all about honoring our island’s incredible past and celebrating the present.

Let’s rewind a bit, shall we? Our story goes waaaay back, over a thousand years, to a time when Isla Mujeres was a sacred sanctuary dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, medicine, and happiness. Imagine Mayan women coming to the island and celebrating their womanhood!

Then in 1517, along come the Spanish explorers, saw all the Ixchel statues and promptly named the island Isla Mujeres – The Island of Women, at least that’s how the story goes :)

Fast forward to August 1850, when our little village, now the lively heart of Centro, officially becomes a Pueblo starting the next 173 years of anniversary celebrations.

This August is the the 174th birthday of Isla Mujeres with activities that’ll have both locals and tourists alike grinning from ear to ear. Nights filled with traditional tunes and folklore dances, mouthwatering food and drink festivals, heart pounding competitions and of course, our legendary town square fiestas, where we all come together to spread love and laughter.
